Semi-back in business

8/26/09 08:19 pm - Semi-back in business

So did I mention that my laptop is out of action until mid-September? I think I did, but I'm not positive.

Anyway, today I got myself a netbook. It has twice the RAM of my old desktop and a hard drive exactly the same size, and it's geared toward not being a primary computer (of course) but the very fact that it has these things means I know that it can handle a lot of the programs I've used on the desktop. That means I can put Adobe Photoshop Elements (and Premiere Elements) on here and not have it melt down... and put a copy of Office on here, and the like. And listen to music and even watch videos. In addition to checking my email and composing notes for my classes on the fly.

I'd actually had a netbook before, one of Asus's very early Eee PCs. For some reason, it constantly froze up on me, and continued to do so no matter what I did. Since it had a really tiny memory cache, and only a smidgen of solid-state storage, I ended up shrugging and just getting a smallish laptop (my Toshiba, the one in the shop, had a 13.3" screen) as a compromise.

But clearly I'm way too hard on laptops, so I have to remember to use the netbook sparingly, as a backup and for when I'm away from home, too.

I'm probably going to get a desktop in a few more days. I've also picked out a new monitor at Target. It's made by Acer, who also made my new little netbook, and it's 1080p with internal speakers and a number of different connections, including both VGA and HDMI. Which means it can serve as both a computer monitor and a TV! I find that quite awesome. I'll actually have a high-definition television in addition to a monitor... and it's remarkably inexpensive. Since from what I've seen and read, Acer is a pretty solid brand right now (these things do change, but they're getting high ratings at the moment) I'm going to go ahead. It's less expensive than a lot of monitors I've been looking at that don't have as many features.

Other stuff going on: Signing up for honors classes and for an independent study course, finishing and submitting my graduation application for May, finding out when I can take the GRE and when the results will get to the schools I'm applying to, and, oh... yes, attending classes, reading bucketloads of stuff, and writing a bazillion papers. (Last year was Production Year; this year is Paper Year.) And Dustdevils... but that only starts in a few days' time and hopefully I'll have a good sense of how much time I have for it by then. Yeah, I can only stick to the one character there, for sure. Shame, because I did have some neat ideas in mind, but yeah, I'd better just stick to playing Dr. Smith.

I... need to clean my room. XD
