I've honestly missed seeing those because I bought up a lot of perm accounts when I first joined, and so generally I don't see ads on the pages at all. Although I'm kind of regretting the perm accounts at the moment for a number of the journals.

I would guess that the ones which are still active, but haven't been touched since 2003, are permanent accounts, or something. I just think content is important to preserve, as much as money.

It's really freaking ironic. "Oh hay, we fixed the comment rot, so now content isn't going to randomly vanish off the site... so now we're going to deliberately delete a whole bunch of it instead!"

I'm just wondering what planet that logic comes from. SRSLY.

Yeah. I used to be big about buying paid and perm accounts for IJ... now I kind of feel like I should spend that money elsewhere. Especially with the added "oh no, if it's a paid/perm account it can stay up forever," which on one hand feels totally reasonable (if you're paying for it, they'd damn well better not delete it) but on the other hand feels like blackmail (if you don't shell out money, you can't guarantee the safety of your coontent!). The rule of thumb should be that if there's content it should also be left alone, too.

LJ pulled some spectacular shit, but I believe even they never crossed that line (except when they were banning people for suspicious-sounding interests and the like).

The problem is that, when they ask you, they've already deleted it. So the default is that it's gone, and if it's a community that other people care about, that means that there's nothing they can do in the absence of the original maintainer. If people don't care about their content being purged, that's fine, but this way of going about it is fucking over people who do care. Especially because several communities (good_rpers_rock for example, which fortunately has been restored upon a complaint being filed) were deleted with no actual notification given to their maintainers.
